What is a Holter monitor test?
The Holter monitors test records continuously your heartbeats. Usually for about 24 to 48 hours. A Holter monitor is a small, portable device that keeps track of your heart rhythm. Your doctor may request to wear a Holter monitor for over two days, depending on your condition is.
Sometimes your doctor may ask for a Holter monitor test when a traditional electrocardiogram (ECG) does not give enough information about your heart’s condition.
Why is a Holter monitor test performed?
Typically, a Holter monitor is performed to detect irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) or unexplained fainting and is usually done if you have a heart condition that increases your risk of an abnormal heart rhythm.. Generally, you’ll have an electrocardiogram (ECG) before you get a Holter monitor.
The Risks a Holter monitor test
There are no risks, but while wearing a Holter monitor, some precautions should be considered.
- Holter monitor can not get wet, or it will be damaged.
- Avoid swim or bathe while wearing your Holter monitor.
- Sometimes electrical appliances can interrupt the signal from the electrodes to the Holter monitor. Avoid the following:
- Electric blankets
- Electric razors and toothbrushes
- Magnets
- Metal detectors
- Microwave ovens
- Keep your mobile devices at least 6 inches from the Holter monitor
